HOSPITAL GOOFED ON BILL

By Woodrow Wilcox

On November 22, 2016, I worked with a client from Hobart, Indiana. He got a bill for immunizations that he did not expect from a local hospital.

I reviewed the papers that he brought to the office and phoned his insurance company with him. The hospital wanted him to pay a balance, but his insurance company’s explanation of benefits specifically told him that he was not responsible for any balance.

The claims representative and her supervisor looked carefully at the claims which the hospital submitted and found the problem. For the immunizations, the hospital incorrectly billed the services as Medicare Part D (medicine) services. The hospital should have billed correctly the services as Medicare Part B office visit with immunization services.

So, I typed a letter for our client to sign and I mailed the letter for him. If the hospital fixes the mistake and refiles the claim, his insurance policy will handle the bill. The bill was less than $100. But, no senior citizen should be forced to pay more than a proper, legal amount just because someone else in the Medicare system makes a mistake. Don’t you agree?

The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency distinguishes itself from others by “going the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not?
