WHAT I TOLD THE CLIENT

On June 10, 2016, I received medical bills from a senior citizen client who lives in Lake Station, Indiana.

I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company for information that was not on the bills. Then, I phoned the client but could not reach him. So, I phoned Medicare and requested that copies of certain documents be sent to our client.

I wrote the client a letter to alert him that some documents would be mailed to him and that he should come to my office with those documents so that we can examine them together. Because the bills totaled almost $2,000, I told him that I would not be able to tell him if the bills were correct or erroneous until he brought the other documents to my office. But, I did tell him what likely caused the bills. Here is part of my letter.

The two most likely reasons for these balances are: (A) someone made a mistake in typing the descriptions or codes for the services rendered, or (B) the services were denied as part of the federal government’s efforts to disallow medical services to Medicare patients in order to save the federal government money for other things. This is part of a change in federal policies that started in 2009. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) cut Medicare benefits for seniors by over $716 billion. That is the figure that the Congressional Budget Office cited after a two year study of Obamacare’s impact on Medicare.

If the bill is caused by a mistake, I can help you. If it is caused by a change in government policy, I can’t help. Be sure to bring the documents to me when you get them.

The help that I am giving this client is FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency distinguishes itself by “going the extra mile” for our clients. But, there is a limit to what we can do. We can help to correct mistakes. But, we can’t change a government policy.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dollars by fighting fraud and mistakes in the Medicare system. Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$.
