SIMPLE MISTAKE FOUND AND FIXED

By Woodrow Wilcox

I received a bill and a note from a client on January 10, 2013. The note asked why the client got a bill despite the fact that he had both Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy that he bought through this insurance agency. The client is from Lowell, Indiana.

The bill from a local hospital was for $203.33. I phoned the client’s insurance company to learn what its records showed. But, first I checked our insurance agency’s records and noticed that the client had a policy with the same company a few years ago. That policy was cancelled and the client now had a different policy with the same insurance company.

The insurance company representative with whom I spoke noticed the problem with the bill before I suggested what it was. The insurance company representative who got the bill found the old policy and not the new, current policy. For that reason, the representative who reviewed the bill the first time thought that our client was not covered for the hospital bill since the old policy had expired.

The representative with whom I spoke realized that the insurance company made a mistake and promised to resubmit the bill with notes to explain what happened. The bill had not been paid because of innocent human error. The insurance company was quick to realize this and correct the problem. When this is done, I believe that our client’s $203.33 bill will be paid.

The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. The owners and managers of this insurance agency know that the Medicare system is not perfect. We give extra effort to protect our senior citizen clients from being harmed financially when mistakes happen. Does your insurance agent give this high level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not?
